Cloudy with a Chance of a Clear Perspective

I love to fly! I love the excitement of how fast the plane goes as it prepares for departure. I thoroughly enjoy the roller coaster effect as we take off. I also enjoy watching everything outside the window get smaller and smaller as we climb to a higher altitude. I don’t even mind the landing. It’s kind of fun to see if the pilot will land just right and rate the landing! My favorite part of flying, though, has to be when we go through the clouds! I wait by the window with child-like wonder as we approach the clouds. They engulf the entire plane until you see nothing but clouds outside your window. I often wonder if the pilots have the same child-like wonder while going through the clouds. Do they ever wonder if the computer controls are giving them the right information? Do they worry if another plane has lost control and is floating directly on our plane’s path? Do they breathe a bit more easily when the clouds are through? I’m sure every passenger has all these thoughts along with me.

Just when the plane is completely covered in the clouds, though, it happens. A little ray of light shines through and I see it; the prettiest blue sky you’ve ever seen. Some describe it as a baby blue, but I like to think of it as a clean-clear blue. It stretches on as far as I can see. As I look down below I see only white mounds of clouds. The puffy, cotton-ball clouds are really the best. Don’t get me wrong, the flat ones are okay, too. I imagine the puffy clouds to be beautiful mountains below and the flatter clouds are the lakes and rivers. They all have a part in this little world above our heads. To think that God took the time to make the tops of the clouds beautiful is beyond me.

Trying to think clearly about life’s circumstances are not always the easiest as I’m going about my daily routine and in the middle of everything. I feel at times as if my head were in the clouds. Trying to see if front of me is of no avail. It’s at those times we tend to search for God. We look up and see clouds. We can’t break through. Some might be tempted to give up. Instead of searching for God, though, maybe we should let Him search us. I think the psalmist had the right perspective when he wrote, “Investigate (search) my life, O God, find out everything about me; cross-examine and test me, get a clear picture of what I’m about; See for yourself whether I’ve done anything wrong – then guide me on the road to eternal life” (The Message, Psalm 139:23-24).

As God searches our hearts and examines us, He gives us a clear picture of who we are. As we look up to God, we cannot see anything but clouds. But, God, being who He is, reaches down and takes us from our earthly perspectives and up through the clouds. This could be the time we panic or wonder if someone else is getting ready to crash into us. We could wonder if we really are on the right path or not. But, by holding God’s hands in the clouds, through faith, He continues to move us past the clouds. Then, it happens. We see a light breakthrough and it’s there. The cleanest, clearest blue sky of God’s perspective on our lives. Are you ready to fly?
