Keep It Simple

As many of you know, my son has food allergies. We’ve been avoiding wheat and eggs for over 6 years now. It’s been a long journey, to say the least. At the same time, it is all worth the effort knowing he is alive and well. When we began our journey with him I had a year of diabetes under my belt. I wanted to be able to cook our same old recipes and just do without the wheat, but it was just not working. The market was not there for anything wheat-free that had any ounce of good taste. Then the Celiac movement came along.
I feel for those who have Celiac disease, but it has been a lifesaver for our family because it means there are many more options for David to eat. Along with the growth of Celiac disease also came the growth of more people developing allergies. This also brought more food options available. This is exciting for me because now I am able to make some of those old recipes now with the better tasting options. One problem, though. There are now so many options I really don’t know where to start. I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed.
It’s been said we are more likely to practice the things we keep simple. How am I supposed to keep this simple? I’ve decided I’m going to stick with two different types of homemade flour to see which one I like better and then stick with it for a while as I try out my recipes. I’m hoping this will work. I’ve tried one flour mixture in my chocolate chip cookie recipe. Before I continue, though, I will try the second flour with this same recipe to see which one I like better. After doing so, I plan to move forward with the winning flour for six months. Oh, that was so hard to say. I feel that as I commit to one flour mixture I might be missing other opportunities to try newer options. The problem with me is that if I were to continue to try all the options, I would finally give up in frustration.
So, I must commit to keep it simple. I have to be content with my decision. It is better for me at this time to have one thing working well enough than to have five or six things only at 50%.
Isn’t this like life? I try to do so many different things at 50%. I hate the idea of not doing my five or six things that I forget a 50% is failing. I must concentrate on the one or two things to decide which is best for my life at any given time.
Hear Paul’s prayer to the Ephesians when he prays, “that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him.  I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe” (Ephesians 1:17-19a NASB).
May you accept God’s power today to not muddy your life and schedule with the 50% activities of our world. I pray you are enlightened to know His calling for the one or two great things you can do exceptionally well. Draw close to God and He will draw close to you. Let’s see where our lives can take us in six months if we commit to keep it simple.
