The Importance of Prayer

The War Room came out last weekend in movie theaters. It is a movie based on the power of prayer in our lives and how we can use prayer as a weapon to fight our battles. I highly recommend this movie to you if you have not already seen it.

For the next month, I would like to talk to you about prayer.

I know for me, personally, I like to pray a lot during the day. Once upon a time I prayed via a journal. This was a great time of reflection, prayer, and Bible reading. Busier days led to reading the Bible and praying God would speak to me during the rest of my day. I would pray for situations and people as God brought them to my attention. Both ways have worked for me: both special, meaningful, and connective. And, these are not the only ways to pray.

There really is no wrong way to pray! Prayer is an intimate way to get to know God better and we must not shy away from knowing God. In knowing God better, we become more aware of the person God created us to be. This person is not always the person we might have expected because of the walls we’ve built up, but we can learn to embrace this person and should embrace this person.

As we see the person God created us to be, we see what our relationship with God is all about: love. This intimate relationship with God can be a bit scary because it’s so real, so raw, so telling.

Our attitude with God and prayer tells a lot about our relationship with Him. Are we going to God with an expectation that He should answer all our prayers how we  have  planned for Him to answer them? Or, are we willing to go to God with our requests and truly leave them there for Him to take from us?

Let’s recap:

  1. There are many different ways to pray.
  2. Prayer is the communication between God and us.
  3. Prayer actually reveals to us who we were created to be and who we are.
  4. Prayer is very intimate.
  5. Prayer shows love between God and His people.
  6. Prayer has to be done with the right attitude.

Don’t give up on prayer and don’t take it lightly. We have been empowered by God to speak with Him and talk over circumstances with Him. Let us approach the throne of grace with confidence.

“So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most. (Hebrews 4:16 NLT)

How is your prayer life? Time to exercise your empowerment to approach your God!
