Just Another Day

Routine. Sometimes the thought of that is nice. You go through the day without a care in the world. All seems normal and there is really nothing that stands out to you.  This was my day today.  Just another day being a mom. I did some laundry, went on a field trip with my son, ate lunch, got groceries and then attended my daughter’s awards ceremony at school.  All in a day’s work, right?  Well, there was not much going on when you think about it, but much more was truly happening.

During the field trip, I learned who my son hangs out with at school. I saw the children who were hurting and needing attention. I learned more about what he lives through for seven hours a day.  I absorbed some of his daily atmosphere in the background of my mind so I can better relate to his stories and problems when he comes home from school and shares about his day.  Same with my daughter’s awards ceremony. I saw how the kids interacted with each other.  I also saw the girl who gives my daughter a hard time and noticed how she vied for everyone else’s attention.

Grocery shopping is always interesting. This normal task can seem to be inconvenient at times, but it is essential to the health and wellbeing of my family.  Planning for meals can seem a bit boring and tedious, but it is beneficial in the long run when other days are hectic and I don’t have to worry if I have anything in the house to cook.

So, what does routine really mean? It’s preparing for the future. Sometimes going through the motions is still preparing for something. I’m still in the act of doing what I’m supposed to be doing…I’m working towards my goal. What is my goal? Well, my personal goal is to be a successful wife and mother. I want what I do to glorify God. This includes serving others. My goals on most days consist of my husband and children. God gave them to me to watch over. I do not do this out of duty, but out of love and with an honor to have such a calling.

No matter what job I do during my lifetime, I have to remember why I do what I do. I do what I do to glorify God; to show others Him. I do all of this even in the routine.
